क्षुत्क्षामाः शिशवः शवा इव तनुर्मन्दादरो बान्धवो
लिप्ता जर्जरकर्करी जतुलवैर्नो मां तथा बाधते ।
गेहिन्या स्फुटितांशुकं घटयितुं कृत्वा सकाकु स्मितं
कुप्यन्ती प्रतिवेशिनी प्रतिदिनं सूचीं यथा याचिता ।।

the children starving, thin as corpses,
a contemptuous relative,
decrepit vessels patched up with lac--
none of these are as painful
as seeing the annoyed lady next door
smiling scornfully at my wife
when everyday she goes to beg
for a needle to mend her tattered dress.
